Can You Update a Jailbroken IPhone?

As you know, jailbreak is the mother of all iPhone hacks, precisely because of how many new features it adds to your iPhone. The problem is, sometimes Apple’s iOS updates through iTunes are pretty good, and you want to have those features too.

Naturally, you would want to update your jailbroken iPhone so that you can take advantage not only of cool apps and features through Cydia and Installer, but also of the new design elements that Apple introduces for the iPhone.

For example, when Apple introduced its multitasking update, I already had a multitasking solution on my iPhone because of jailbreak. However, Apple’s solution seemed pretty smart and innovative, so I wanted to try it out.

Unfortunately, I discovered that you can only sometimes update a jailbroken iPhone. Most of the time, you cannot. Usually, when you update your jailbroken iPhone in iTunes, your jailbreak will become undone and you will have to rejailbreak it. That is one option.

But some jailbreak programs allow you to download a custom firmware that you can install to your iPhone to update it without losing the iPhone jailbreak. If you are wondering whether you can update an iPhone that has undergone jailbreak, the answer to your question is simply, it depends.
